Fern walked after Vheni. They'd been walking for what seemed like hours now, struggling through the plants, looking for a suitable place to rest. They had yet to stumble upon a safe place where they could spend the rest of the day. They had come to some good-looking places, but Vheni had rejected them after a sniff around the area, muttering something about monsters. Fern did not question her friend, though she wondered. Monsters? What type of monsters resided here, in this seemingly innocent forest?
Vheni and Fern traveled on slowly, when they heard a sound behind them. Fern glanced behind them, and she froze, her mouth open. A black creature with leathery wings, much like a dragon's, walked into sight behind them. Vheni whipped around, her lips drawing back to show her sharp teeth.
"Run. Now." Vheni said urgently, leaping in front of Fern.
"I can't leave you here!" Fern protested, unmoving.
"You'll get hurt!" Vheni snarled. "I've fought monsters before. Leave me and go."
Fern remained standing where she was, but her hand traveled to the dagger that was hidden within her clothes. "No."
Vheni's low rumble turned into a loud, vicious growl, but she did not talk more, for the monster had leapt. Fern gasped as it bounded toward them, its red claws outstretched, reaching for Vheni. Vheni remained still until the last second, when she leapt up to meet the monster in midair, butting the monster in the belly and sending him staggering backwards. Then it became a whirl of teeth and claws as Vheni attacked the monster. This creature was much more intelligent than that German Shepherd, and Vheni was quickly wounded, though she gave more than she received.
The fight lasted for what seemed like eternity, and Vheni's movements began to slow, while the monster's seemed only to speed up. Unable to see her friend like this, Fern slid her dagger out of its sheath, and leapt forward.
Vheni saw her, and shouted, "Fern! No!" but Fern continued forward, raising her dagger.
The monster saw her, but it was too late to stop the oncoming blade, and the silver impaled itself in where the heart of the monster should have been. One second, the monster was there, a look of shock inscribed on its face; the next, it was gone, and Fern was covered in black dust.
"What the heck?" Fern muttered in confusion, stowing her dagger away again and shaking the dust out of her ponytail. "It wasn't supposed to do that, was it?"
"It was," Vheni replied calmly, shaking the dust out of her reddish fur. "It was a monster, and monsters disintegrate when they die, to be returned to wherever they come from. They regenerate and come back later, but I feel like they're coming back faster these days..." She trailed off, staring into the distance, then shook her head. "Never mind. You'll see."
Fern, still confused, did not protest, but stayed and waited as she she-wolf licked her wounds, looking around in case any other monsters happened to chance upon them.
